Position Available: Part-Time Library Clerk

The Avon Free Library is looking for a motivated, organized, and creative individual to work in our Children's Library (mostly) and is willing to work some days, evenings, and Saturdays at 10 to 15 hours per week. This position will also be asked to support the Children's Library programming and events.

TITLE:             LIBRARY CLERK

QUALIFICATIONS
Post secondary education preferred. Proficient in computer and typing skills including the ability to alphabetize.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBLITIES
Under the general supervision of the Director or Senior Clerk, the Library Clerk works at the Circulation/Information desks as assigned and is responsible for assisting adults, young adults, and children.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Library Operations
1)      Provide assistance to patrons with general reference requests.
2)      Perform circulation and registration duties.
3)      Issue borrower cards according to Library procedures.
4)      Assist patrons in use of computers.
5)      Notify patrons by phone when material is overdue or reserved items are available.
6)      Assist in material selections.
7)      Assist with the inventorying and weeding of library collections.
8)      Recommend necessary library services.
9)      Assist in maintaining a neat, efficient, pleasant atmosphere for library users.
10)    Attends and obtains ongoing education.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
1)      Ability to comprehend patron needs quickly and accurately, and to act on their requests using good judgment and tact.
2)      Ability to work with a wide variety of people.
3)      Broad literary background and knowledge of standard reference works.
4)      Computer knowledge with Internet experience.
5)      Flexibility in handling a variety of duties and in accepting new ideas.
6)      Ability to handle confidential matters in a discreet manner.
7)      Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekend hours and fill in for other staff because of absence.

8)      Willingness to travel to meetings when necessary.
